I probably can’t give a fair review to this movie given my review of Eli Roth’s first film, Cabin Fever. Cabin Fever was so bad that I really just wanted to get Hostel out of the way. I was pleasantly surprised when Hostel wasn’t absolute worst movie I saw this year. Hostel is about 3 guys backpacking across Europe who stop at a mysterious Bulgarian Hostel looking for sex with Eastern European women. Instead they uncover a conspiracy of torture and murder. Hostel wasn’t good, but it passed the two hours adequately. Rick Hoffman puts out a brief, but spectacular performance.
Notably, while Hostel is decent, it is hardly a decent horror film. Indeed, while the movie features almost an hour of wall to wall gore and torture, it features almost no conventions from the horror genre. I suppose it’s more of a “torture thriller” or something.
